- Stone Quality for Gabions: The smallest dimension of any stone must be at least twice the longer dimension of the mesh used in the gabion box.
- Gabion Construction: Gabions shall be constructed from steel wire with mechanical properties that exceed the minimum standards outlined in EN 10223-3. The steel wire must be heavily galvanized with Galfan (a Zn-5%Al-MM alloy), and a PVC/Epoxy coating of at least 0.5 mm thickness is applied over the galvanized layer.
- Zinc Coating: The minimum weight of the zinc coating on the uncoated wire surface must be at least 200 grams per square meter.
- Tensile Strength of Wire: The tensile strength of the wire should be between 40-50 kg/mm².
- Gabion Cage Design: Gabion cages shall consist of wire netting that is double twisted to form a square mesh (100 mm x 100 mm) or triple twisted to form a hexagonal mesh (80 mm x 100 mm), as approved by the engineer. The mesh panels shall be made from 10-gauge wire, with a tolerance on wire diameter of ±2.5%.
- Edge and Diaphragm Specifications: All edges of the gabion boxes must be finished with selvedge wire (9 gauge). Diaphragms must be manufactured from the same material as the parent gabion, with selvedge wire throughout their perimeter. Diaphragms must be positioned to ensure no internal dimension in a gabion box or mattress exceeds 1.0 meter along the length of the box.
- Binding and Connecting Wires: Each gabion box shall be supplied with sufficient binding and connecting wires to bind all diaphragms and closing edges.
