Clean water is a necessity for residential, commercial and industrial applications. However, natural water can be contaminated for a variety of reasons and therefore requires additional treatment to meet drinking water standards. Two water quality parameters - pH and Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) - need to be tested before a suitable treatment solution can be determined.

What are pH and ORP controllers?

pH and ORP controllers are automated devices used to monitor and control the acidity and alkalinity (pH) and redox potential (ORP) of liquids.

pH value: indicates the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. The lower the pH value, the more acidic the solution; the higher the pH value, the more alkaline the solution.

ORP value: measures the strength of redox reaction in the solution. The higher the ORP value, the stronger the oxidation of the solution.

What is a PH/ORP sensor?

A PH/ORP sensor is an important component of a PH/ORP controller, used to directly sense the PH and ORP values in the measured solution and convert them into electrical signals for output to the controller for processing. The sensor is generally composed of four parts: sensitive element, conversion element, conversion circuit and auxiliary power supply, and is miniaturised, digitalised and intelligent.

Classified by sensor type
· Flexible: the sensor is designed to be flexible, easy to install and replace, and suitable for a variety of measurement environments.

· Insertion type: Insertion type sensors are usually used in applications where measurement needs to be carried out deep inside the liquid, such as industrial water treatment, environmental monitoring and other fields. They have a robust structure and long cables for stable operation in liquids.

· Hygienic: Hygienic sensors have a particular focus on cleaning and sterilisation and are typically used in industries where high hygiene standards are required, such as pharmaceutical, food and beverage. These sensors are made from materials that are easy to clean and sterilise, such as 316SS (stainless steel) and PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride).

· Submersible: Submersible sensors are fully or partially immersed in the liquid to be measured and provide continuous, stable monitoring of the pH and ORP of the liquid. They are usually equipped with longer cables and robust housings to adapt to a variety of harsh measurement environments.

Classification by electrode material

· General-purpose glass electrode: this is one of the most common electrode materials, suitable for most water quality monitoring scenarios, with good stability and measurement accuracy.

· Hydrofluoric Acid Resistant Glass Electrode: This electrode is resistant to hydrofluoric acid corrosion, and is particularly suitable for industrial wastewater treatment containing hydrofluoric acid and other fields.

· Platinum Electrode: Platinum electrode is used for ORP measurement with good conductivity and stability, usually used with different types of diaphragms to adapt to different measurement environments.

Classified by technical characteristics

· Digital Sensor: The digital sensor has a built-in intelligent chip and signal processing circuit, which can directly convert the measurement signal into digital signal output. The sensor has the advantages of high precision, high stability and easy integration.

· Analogue Sensors: Analogue sensors output analogue signals (e.g. voltage or current signals), which need to be processed by an analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) to obtain a digital result. These sensors are less expensive, but may be slightly less accurate and stable than digital sensors.
